A lot of us have excuses, reasons why we can’t find our dream job. Well to serve as inspiration, I share the story of my friend Eric who is not finding any excuses and believe me he could find many of them to not live his dream. Eric suffers from a rare, debilitating disease called Menageries that can strike at any time with dizziness and basically left him in bed for six months last year. What amazed me about Eric was that he never complained and instead greeted the day with a positive attitude and even managed to do his job where he works on harnessing the vitality of the private sector to address the health problems of low-income and vulnerable populations in developing countries. At the same time, Eric was there the best he could for his wife and three young children.
Eric has made a choice to not let his disease stop him from living his fullest life and making an enormous difference in this world. In July, Eric, his wife and three children are packing their bags and moving to Ethiopia for two years, so Eric can serve as the Chief of Party for the USAID 10 million dollar funded HIV prevention program.
The truth is Eric could have taken a more practical career path with top-notch experience working with Sony, Gateway, Intel among other companies, but instead he decided to leave high-tech and follow his passion for international development. Sure it was a stretch financially, especially in supporting his family, but they are all behind him and all believe in his dream.
Also Eric wanted me to share that is ok to change your path if you realize that it is not your passion. Eric wasn’t afraid to walk about from studying accounting for four years and went to work with an accounting firm and realized he was miserable. He again took a bold step and applied for the Peace Corps and lived/worked in Bolivia for two years – instilling him the desire to be involved in international development.
Eric is an inspiration to me and I hope he serves as one to you. Stop giving yourself excuses, reasons why you can’t have your dream job – start living it!!
